Nutrition North Canada & the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) asked the Arctic Energy Alliance to coordinate a one-time Community Freezer project for the Northwest Territories.  Through this project, communities in the NWT were able to purchase EnergyStar(TM), energy efficient, deep freezers to help ensure that country foods and other perishable (spoilable) foods are properly stored and food spoilage is avoided.  The Dehcho First Nations coordinated the purchase, delivery and installation of these community freezers for the Dehcho region.

This project was undertaken amid a major time constraint and the regional organizations who delivered this Community Freezer project worked under very short timeframes to ensure that the communities in their regions could receive more energy efficient freezers to store their community supply of “country foods” and other perishable items.

Through this project 36 EnergyStar(TM) chest freezers were purchased & distributed to 9 communities in the Dehcho.  This picture shows 2 of the 4 large EnergyStar(TM) chest freezers that the community of Trout Lake (Sambaa K’e) received through this project.

"Mahsi cho!" to the Dehcho First Nations, all the communities and AEA Staff involved for their efforts to get these Energy Star(TM) Community Freezers in place under the short timeframe of this project.
