The Arctic Energy Alliance along with others from the NWT were asked to participate in and make a presentation at NRCAN’s Remote Smart Microgrid workshop at the end of September. The meeting was held to discuss an approach to optimize performance, effectively integrate appropriate renewable energy and reduce diesel consumption in our remote electrical grids. The group brought together included university researchers, utility providers, government and independent project organizers. There were discussions about the success that other communities had had in reducing their diesel consumption both with improved system performance and the integration of renewables. We hope to continue working to look at the role that smart meters may have in helping the NWT reduce diesel consumption and save both energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
