October 15th – 19th residents of the NWT are encouraged to celebrate National Waste Reduction Week. During this year’s event, Arctic Energy Alliance and Ecology North have teamed up to be able to offer fun and informative workshops in Hay River and Fort Providence. Ecology North will also hold an event in Yellowknife. With growing economic and environmental costs associated with energy use in the Northwest Territories, we will focus on how to create a more energy efficient home, and reduce household solid waste, while saving money.

“It’s great timing for people in the NWT to start getting their home ready for the cold season ahead,” says Arctic Energy Alliance’s Dehcho coordinator Teresa Chilkowich, “We’ve got some great hands-on tips that can help reduce energy loss in your home and save you money!”. Arctic Energy Alliance will be demonstrating how to winterize your home to prevent heat loss, use your woodstove efficiently and safely and there will be door prizes.

Reducing your household solid waste will also be promoted during these events. Ecology North will be covering topics such as backyard and worm composting, bottled water vs. tap water, recycling options (Hay River & Yellowknife), reducing energy and environmental costs while doing laundry, and info on the GNWT's Beverage Container Recycling Program and Single-Use Retail Bag Program. “There aren’t simple solutions to our landfills filling up,” says Hay River’s Ecology North Coordinator, Kim Rapati “So the best thing we can do is to reduce the amount of waste we create and divert what we can. It’s important to learn about what options are available, like recycling and composting, and then work them into your daily life.”

These events are made possible through financial support from the GNWT Environment and Natural Resources.
