Late this summer, the Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) commissioned five solar demonstration systems to Windsor, Ontario based Green Sun Rising. There were two demonstration system designs chosen, and each one is a fully functioning portable Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) system that AEA will use to support the education & promotion of what Solar PV can and cannot do in in the Northwest Territories.

All five demonstration systems include 250 watt polycrystalline panels, sealed Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) energy storage batteries, pure sign wave inverters, maximum power point charge controllers, all required fusing and disconnects, both AC & DC power outlets – ready to provide stand-alone, off-grid solar power. The complete system has been inspected and approved by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), a recognized electrical safety designation in the Northwest Territories.

Two of the systems will include one 250 watt panel, and the three other systems will be a larger 500 watt (2 panel) system. The five systems will be available for AEA to use for education and public events from AEA’s Yellowknife head office and also at each of AEA’s regional offices (Whati, Inuvik, Norman Wells and Fort Simpson).

The systems are now crated and are en route to Yellowknife. The AEA anticipates that they will be available for public education in all of our regional offices by early 2014. The AEA thanks GNWT Environment and Natural Resources for its financial contribution towards this exciting initiative.
