Introduction

The NWT Biomass Energy Association (NWTBEA) became a legally incorporated Society as of October 21, 2013. The society was created by private sector business and trades people with a pecuniary interest in the biomass energy sector. Key challenges identified to date are interpretation of codes and standards, fire marshal approvals, inspections, cost of engineering certification, cost of insurance and pellet quality. The objectives of the Society are:

  • A strong and reliable biomass sector able to contribute significantly to the NWT’s sustainable energy system while preserving ecosystems equilibrium and ensuring economic development.
  • To represent, protect, and promote the interests of the NWT biomass industry in general and of its members in particular.
  • Work to grow the NWT biomass sector by identifying new opportunities and promoting job creation.

Recent Activity

The President and a director of the NWTBEA met with the Honourable Michael Miltenberger on Wednesday the 22nd of January, 2014. The President of the NWTBEA reported to his membership that the meeting was positive and productive with an outcome that suggests the Minister supports efforts to facilitate growth of the NWT biomass energy sector.

The NWTBEA’s identified challenges to sectoral growth were discussed and the outcome of the meeting was direction by the Minister to GNWT staff to identify the key impediments to biomass sectoral growth and to advance government’s efforts to establish a governance framework that facilitates the NWT biomass energy sector’s ongoing development and growth.

Subsequent to the meeting with Minister Miltenberger, members of the NWTBEA held a facilitated workshop on February 12, 2014, with funding support provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR). The outcome of the workshop will be a report of the key impediments to biomass energy sector growth, as identified by the NWTBEA. The draft report is scheduled for the first week of March and the final the following week.
