Teresa Chilkowich, Arctic Energy Alliance’s Dehcho Energy Coordinator, traveled to Jean Marie River with electrical contractor, Lindsay Waugh, from Kiwi Electric Ltd. The purpose of their trip was to do a site visit to prepare for the installation of approximately 20 “Smart Meters” in May 2014. This project is part of an NRCan initiative to reduce diesel use in small remote off grid communities in Canada. A similar project is occurring in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

GNWT Environment & Natural Resources staff, Wade Carpenter and Brian Pelkey, traveled from Yellowknife to meet with Teresa and Lindsay in Jean Marie River to assess the next steps for preparing to install this electrical monitoring equipment. Kiwi Electric Ltd. will be installing smart meters in various commercial and community buildings to allow electrical data to be monitored for a 1 year period. This data will be used to capture a detailed electricity profile for the community to identify electricity saving measures with the end goal of eventually quantifying the full potential of connecting renewables to the grid.
