The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) congratulates Brad Mapes of Wesclean Northern Sales Ltd. for achieving EnerGuide Ratings of 82 and 83 on three New Homes they recently finished building in Hay River. With an integrated and efficient construction design of building materials and processes, insulation, air tightness, ventilation, mechanical system efficiency and Energy Star® appliances and lighting, these homes will provide many decades of “Energy Affordability” to the new homeowners.

The City of Yellowknife has a Building Bylaw requiring builders of all new residential housing to achieve a minimum EnerGuide Rating of 80. Although there is no similar Building Bylaw in Hay River, Brad chose to follow the full EnerGuide for New Homes evaluation process. AEA completed plan file assessments for each house, attended the construction site to provide advice whenever we were in Hay River over the past year, completed pre-drywall blower door tests to help the construction crews air seal the houses, and most recently completed the final assessments. The first three houses completed have all scored an EnerGuide for New Homes rating of 82 or 83 – Congratulations!

The top photo is in front of one of Brad’s new homes following a presentation to Brad of a New Home EEIP rebate, and shows Louise Schumann, EEIP Program Administrator, AEA South Slave Office; Brad Mapes, President, Wesclean Northern Sales Ltd.; and  Tom Gross, Regional Energy Project Coordinator, AEA South Slave Office.

The lower picture includes Brad and Tom, as well as Ken Baigent, Energy Management Specialist with AEA. The picture also includes AEA’s energy efficient electric Vehicle (the Chevy Volt) parked in the driveway of one of Brad’s energy efficient homes. There was great laughter when Louise jokingly told Brad that he had won a Chevy Volt for his accomplishment.
