Whati is planning to install a biomass district heating system. The location for the system was chosen, it will be located in the old two bay garage. There will be seven buildings heated by this system: Mezi Community School, Nursing Station, Community Government Office, Tlicho Government office, Seniors Home, Fire hall, and a new hotel that will be built next year. An application for funding has been submitted to the Government of Canada’s EcoEnergy for Aboriginal and Northern Communities Program. The leaders and citizens are very supportive of this initiative. They hope to transport materials on the next winter road and install the heating system in the following summer.

Gameti is also hoping to install a district heating system and will start the application process next spring.

These systems will be similar to the district heating system already installed in Behchoko (shown in picture) which is saving money and has reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) production.
