Monitored energy output of SolarWall® (a solar air heating system) at the Weledeh Catholic School, Yellowknife

The SolarWall® system, is a type of solar air heating system, consisting of a dark corrugated metal cladding with small perforations across its surface.  The system preheats cold outdoor air from solar energy before introducing it as ventilation air into the building, resulting in energy savings.

The picture shows the SolarWall® system at the Weledeh Catholic School in Yellowknife, that is currently being monitored and the monthly energy outputs are displayed below. Detailed hourly data is also available for download for interested individuals.

Installed in 1998 and covering 192 square meters of façade space, this solar air heating system at the Weledeh School is the oldest installation of its kind in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The wall is oriented at 15º west of south and partially shaded in shoulder seasons. The available incoming solar radiation is measured at a discrete location on the wall, which is generally unshaded. The monitoring efforts hope to evaluate the performance and suitability of similar solar air heating technology in NWT and the far North.
