Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) provides rebates to northerners who purchase new, more energy-efficient models of products that they use every day. Buying energy-efficient products will help you save energy costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Note: Customers who purchase eligible LED lighting or clothes washers at select Northern or NorthMart stores will have their rebates applied at the checkout, and do not have to submit a rebate application to the AEA. See the “Fine Print” section below for more information.
CHANGES FOR 2026/27 FISCAL YEAR (April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027)
We’ve made the following changes for this year:
- The maximum rebate amounts for the following items have been increased:
- Wood stoves
- Pellet stoves
- Programable thermostats
- ECM pumps
- Rebate amounts are now the same for hydro communities and non-hydro communities, except for LED lighting.
- You no longer need to purchase a product in the NWT to receive the full rebate amount.
- We’ve increased the number of rebates you can get on programmable thermostats in a year: individuals can get up to 5 and business can get up to 25.
How the Program Works
Purchase an Eligible Product
Simply purchase an eligible product.
Want to know where to buy eligible products in the NWT? We keep a list of participating NWT vendors that we’re aware of.
Some products must be ENERGY STAR® certified to qualify for a rebate. You can use Natural Resources Canada’s searchable product list to find out if an item is ENERGY STAR certified.
Complete the Application Form
You have up to 3 months from the date you purchase an item to apply for a rebate.
To apply, complete the application form and attach a copy of your sales receipt and proof that the item qualifies for a rebate (such as the EnerGuide card showing the ENERGY STAR logo). Make sure the sales receipt (proof of purchase) clearly shows the following:
- The date of purchase
- The price of the product
- The model number, if applicable
- The name of the vendor who sold the product
- Proof that the product has been paid for in full
The name on the receipt should be same as the name on your application. If there is no name and address on your receipt, we will also ask to see proof that you live in the NWT (such as a drivers licence or utility bill).
The application forms can be downloaded below.
Customers who purchase eligible LED lighting or washers at select Northern or NorthMart stores will have their rebates applied at the checkout and do not have to send a rebate application to the AEA. See the “Fine Print” section below for a list of participating communities.
Return the Application Form
Mail, email, fax or deliver the application form, a copy of the sales receipt, and proof of product eligibility to Arctic Energy Alliance.
Please allow six weeks for delivery of your rebate cheque.
Eligible Products
ENERGY STAR Certified Washers and Ventless Dryers
Customers who purchase eligible washers at select Northern or NorthMart stores will have their rebates applied at the checkout and do not have to send a rebate application to the AEA. See the “Fine Print” section below for a list of participating communities.
Your clothes washing machine and dryer are two of the biggest energy users in your home. If you want to lower your electricity bill, replace your old appliance with an energy-efficient ENERGY STAR certified appliance.
| Appliance | Rebate amount |
| Washing machine | $200 |
| Ventless dryer | $500 |
| All-in-one washer/ventless dryer | $750 |
An all-in-one washer/ventless dryer must be a single unit. Stackable systems are considered separate washers and dryers and may receive rebates if they meet the criteria for each piece.
Ventless dryers must use a condenser or heat pump instead of venting air to the outside.
LED Lighting
Rebates are no longer available on LED lighting in communities that use hydroelectricity (Behchokǫ̀, Dettah, Enterprise, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith, Hay River, Kátł’odeeche, Ndilǫ or Yellowknife).
LED lighting:
- Uses up to 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs
- Lasts 3 times longer than CFLs and 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs
- Has no mercury
- Can be dimmable and very durable (depending on the model)
Customers who purchase eligible LED lighting at select Northern or NorthMart stores will have their rebates applied at the checkout and do not have to send a rebate application to the AEA. See the “Fine Print” section below for a list of participating communities.
Integrated LED lighting is not eligible for a rebate.
| Product | Rebate: communities with hydroelectricity | Rebate: non-hydro communities |
| LED bulbs & tubes | Not available in hydro communities | Up to $200 a year |
Heating Appliances
A wood stove or pellet stove can help you save big on home heating costs, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the process.
| Heating appliance | Rebate |
| Wood stove | 50% of purchase cost, up to $2,000 |
| Wood pellet stove | 50% of purchase cost, up to $2,000 |
Purchase cost does not include installation or accessories (chimney, flue pipe, etc.).
Home Upgrades
Drain Water Heat Recovery
A drain water heat recovery system can help you save on water heating costs by capturing some of the heat from your shower’s drain water and using it to pre-heat cold water entering your home. Heating water can account for 20–30% of your home’s energy usage, and a drain water heat recovery system can reclaim up to 40% of that energy—and reduce you greenhouse gas emissions.
| Product | Rebate |
| Drain water heat recovery system with a minimum 30% efficiency | $700 |
Programmable Thermostats
A programmable thermostat can help you save heating fuel by automatically turning down the heat when you’re asleep or away from home.
| Product | Rebate |
| Programmable thermostat | 50% of purchase cost, up to $150 |
ECM Pumps
Pumps with electronically commutated motors (ECMs) automatically control the speed and flow rate to find the greatest efficiency. They’re most commonly used to circulate water for hydronic (hot water) heating systems, but there are also models available for potable water.
As an example of the savings, the AEA compared two similar pumps and found that the non-ECM model would cost about $244 a year to operate, while the ECM model would cost about $67 a year when set in automatic mode.
| Product | Rebate |
| ECM pump | 50% of purchase cost, up to $500 |
Automated vehicle plug-in controllers
Vehicle block heaters and battery blankets use a lot of power. Automated vehicle plug-in controllers are programmable outlets that can control the power to a block heater, battery blanket or other vehicle pre-heating system based on the outdoor temperature. The power is on just enough to keep your vehicle warm and ready to start anytime.
To be eligible for a rebate, an automated vehicle plug-in controller must meet the following conditions:
- Must be designed specifically to control power to a block heater, battery blanket, or another vehicle pre-heating system other than a cabin heater.
- Must be programmable and must regulate the power to the system based on current outdoor temperature (not by time alone).
| Product | Rebate |
| Automated vehicle plug-in controller | 50% of purchase cost, up to $150 |
Home Insulation
Insulation keeps your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It can deliver comfort and lower energy bills during the hottest and coldest times of the year—and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.
| Insulation type | Rebate |
| Exterior wall insulation | Up to $8,000 |
| Ceiling insulation | Up to $1,500 |
| Exposed floor insulation | $500 |
| Basement insulation | Up to $2,500 |
| Basement header insulation | $625 |
| Crawlspace insulation | Up to $2,000 |
